OVERVIEW

The predecessor of Peking University School ofHealth Humanities (PKUSHH) is Beijing Medical University Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, which was established in1985 to adapt to the changes in medical model. The School of Foundational Education of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC) was formed in July 2002 after the merger of Beijing Medical University and Peking University in 2000, to strengthen the public and general education at PKUHSC, incorporating into Department of Social Sciences and Humanities such divisions from the former Beijing Medical University as Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, Department of Foreign Languag Studies, Department of Physical Education, Teachingand Research Section of Mathematics, Physicsand Computer Science, and Health Law . In April 2008.the School of Foundational Education was renamed as Peking University Institute for Medical Humanities in an efort to adapt to the development of health services. In November 2018, it was renamedas Peking University School of Health Humanities.


PKUSHH currently offers a five-year undergraduate program in English (Biomedical English), and hasdoctoral degree programs in the first-level discipline ofScience and Technology History and the second-level discipline of Applied Psychology. It also has master's degree programs in the first-level discipline of Science and Technology History, the second-level disciplines of Applied Psychology, Marxist Basic Principles, Political Education, and Foundational Studies in Modern and Contemporary Chinese History, as well as a master's degree program in the first-level discipline of Applied Psychology. The School also has a postdoctoral research station in Science and Technology History. In addition, PKUSHH is home to doctoral andmaster's students in philosophy, psychology, Marxisttheory, foreign languages and literature, and law, as well as postdoctoral fellows in philosophy, psychology. PKUSHH boasts a comprehensive and brilliant research team specializing in general education and health humanities education, with rich experience and significant academic achievements in education and teaching as well as scientific research. It has undertaken a variety of research projects, including major and key projects finded by the National Social Science Foundation, as well as applied projects commissioned by government agencies at various levels. It has provided a large number of proposals facilitating the decision-making process and many of its faculty members serve as directors of influential academic organizations in the field of health humanities both at home and abroad.


Guided by the core values of socialism, PKUSHH is firmly committed to its fundamental task of cultivating moral character and ability. It upholds the long-standing humanistic traditions of both Chinese and Western medicine, drawing on the profound cultural heritage of Peking University, and is dedicated to multidisciplinary dialogues and inter-disciplinary integration between medical sciences, the humanities andsocial sciences. The School seeks to understand health, disease, and medicine from multidisciplinary perspectives such as history, philosophy, ethics, law, psychology, sociology, narrative medicine, literature.and art, promoting, interdisciplinary education and research. It provides theoretical and empirical support forthe reform and development in medical education and health care in China so as to drive the high-qualitydevelopment of general education and health humanities education and contribute to a healthier China.
