Overview

“With Research as its Mission”, SHH is committed to the highest standards of research. SHH has undertaken a number of meaningful national and international research projects at various levels and scales, funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Social Science Fund, Chinese Ministry of Education, Cooperative Research Framework of EU, China Medical Board, National Institutes for Health of the US, etc. SHH has published many academic works, include the periodical Chinese Medical Humanities Review, Peking University Medical Humanities Translation Series, Blue Book on Doctor Patient Relationship and many others, some of which have won international or national awards.

SHH actively seeks international collaboration and communication. The School has hosted many national and international academic conferences, such as Beijing Forum Sub Forum in Medicine, the 9th Meeting of International Society for the History of Medicine, China-US Conference on Medical Professionalism, International Conference on Global History of Primary Health Care, the 2nd Peking University International Conference on Medical Humanities, and Western Medicine in China 1800-1950. It has established close partnership in education and scientific research with several universities and academic institutions overseas, including Yale University, Harvard University, UTMB Institute for the Medical Humanities at GalvestonColumbia University Institute for Medical Professionalism, the Wellcome Trust in the UK, the History Department of University College London, Johns Hopkins University Department of the History of Medicine, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Focusing on the needs of national development and society, the School strengthens the discipline construction, continuously optimizes discipline layout, conducts organized scientific research, promotes the integrated development of disciplines, and cultivates new discipline growth points. The School also endeavors to promote the construction of "Double First-Class", creates an academic brand of health humanities, builds an academic exchange platform, and forges a health humanities disciplinegroup with international influence. In 2022, in the fifth round of discipline evaluation, the discipline of history of science and technology was rated as A, ranking among top disciplines.

Faculty members at SHH have enjoyed high academic reputation in their research fields. Many of them take up important positions in academic associations such as International Academy of the History of ScienceScientific Committee of the International Society of Medical History, Board of International Association of Life and Ethics, Medical Humanities Course Development Committee of Medical Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, Medical Ethics Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Chinese Society of Dialectics of Nature, Chinese Society of History of Science and Technology, and the Chinese Society of Science and Technology Policy.

In line with the tenet of' "strengthening the School with scientific research", the faculty carries out scientific research work in a rigorous and realistic spirit, and has produced a number of high-quality academic works which have gained a number of vertical research grants such as National Social Science Fund Key Grant.General Grant, Youth Grant, Special Proiect on Rare Disciplines Studies, and Ministry of Education Socia Science Fund Grant. The number of academic papers and highly cited papers published in top journals home and abroad is rising. In 2022, CONG Yali's team published a paper "Research under China's personal information law--The new law may present obstacles to some kinds of research" in Science.

As an old saying in China, “It is such a delight to have friends coming from afar”. Together with domestic and foreign scholars, Peking University School of Health Humanities hold the vision of constructing good academic atmosphere, building up a platform for cooperating and communicating, to make greater contributions to the internationalization of China's medical humanities researches.
