Department of Physical Education and Health
Overview

The Department of Physical Education, School of Fundamental Education, Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC), was founded in 2002. Its predecessor is the Section of Physical Education, PUHSC. The current chairman of the department is Liu Dachuan. The department has always been aimed at improving the physical and mental health of students in an all-round way and cultivating good fitness habits of students, earnestly implementing the idea of “health first”, strengthening the basic construction of sports facilities and improving the overall level of the physical education teachers, and striving to create a new system of physical education in PUHSC. There are 23 faculty members in the department, including 1 Professor, 7 associate professors, 10 lecturers, 2 teaching assistants and 3 staff members. Among them, one has doctoral degree, 9 master’s degrees and 10 bachelor’s degrees.

In accordance with the Guidelines of Physical Education for Institutes of Higher Education issued by the State Education Commission, and in light of one of the characteristics of the medical university—there are more female students than male students, our department offers PE courses at all stages and makes various courses available, with special attention paid to more suitable courses for female students, such as Artistic Gymnastics, Aerobics, Yoga and other courses. In order to improve the teaching quality, the department organizes the collective lesson preparation and pedagogic research on a regular basis, enriches and perfects the teaching content, and makes physical education more in line with the characteristics of medical colleges. Such courses are offered including Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Table tennis, Martial Arts, Aerobics, Yoga and Rhythmic Gymnastics. In order to improve the teaching of physical education theory, the department uses multimedia and network teaching and other means to help the students to learn in a more intuitive and vivid way.
