Peking University Center for History of Medicine, founded in 1989, is an interdisciplinary institute devoted to academic research in the historyof medicine and health, and alsoone of the earliest doctoral degrees conferring spots of the first-level discipline—history of science and technology. The Center was aimed to study the history of medicine and its evolution, understand the relevance between medicine and society, politics, economy and culture, and explore new direction and methodology in research of the historyof medicine, so as to make specific contribution to the development of medicine and healthcare. The major research areas involved include history of medical technology, socio-cultural history of medicine, history of medical ideology, history of global health, history of medical humanities education, and comparative history of bioethics, and etc. The courses provided by the center are “history of science and technology”, “medical philosophy”, “science, technology and society”(STS), “history of medicine”, “transcultural study of bioethics”, “issues and methods in history of modern medicine”,“Chinesetraditional medical culture”, and “theme-based colloquial”.
Peking University Center for History of Medicine grew out of the Unit of Medicine History which was set up in Peking Universityin 1946, and has developed into a vital cultivation base for researchers in history of medicine in China. The center has been affiliated by several academic societies, such as the Chinese Society for the History of Medicine (sub-society of Chinese Society for the History of Science and Technology) and Chinese representative of International Society for the History of Medicine, and has hosted several international and national conferences in recent years. In 2017, the 9th meeting of International Society for the History of Medicine was successfully co-organized and co-hosted by the Center for History of Medicine and Chinese Society for the History of Medicine. The director of the center, Prof. Daqing Zhang was selected as the council member of International Society for the History of Medicine, and has played a significant role in promoting the internationalization of medical history research in China.
