The 109th Peking University Medical Humanities Forum: Zheng Nian: The Concept and Technology of Health Popularization

On the morning of April 10th, 2023, Zheng Nian, Researcher from the China Research Institute for Science Popularization was invited to deliver a lecture entitled “The Concept and Technology of Health Popularization”. Pan Longfei (Lecturer from the School of Health Humanities, Peking University) chaired the lecture, and Associate Professor Chen Qi (School of Health Humanities, Peking University) was invited as the commentator. The lecture was held ar Room 620, Yifu Teaching Building, and more than 30 teachers and students from the School of Health Humanities attended this lecture.

This lecture provided a detailed explanation of the brief history of science popularization development, the adhesive between science and humanities, the forms and technologies of science popularization, the trends of science popularization in the new era and so on. Based on this, Researcher Zheng discussed how to integrate the major of health humanities with health popularization.

Researcher Zheng mentioned that China is facing technology “bottleneck” and is constrained by other countries. It is of great significance to make young people aware of this through science popularization in the new era. The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China has pointed out that it is necessary to strengthen the construction of national science popularization capacity and deepen reading activities for all Chinese people. The background of science popularization has changed. Science popularization is no longer simply about popularizing technology or knowledge, but about integrating the work of science popularization into various fields such as politics, economy, society, and cultural ecology.

After explaining the importance of science popularization, Researcher Zheng Nian introduced the brief history of science popularization development, including the historical development of the term “science popularization”, the development of science popularization in China, the differentiation and analysis of related concepts of science popularization, and an overview of the behavior in science popularization system. Zheng pointed out that the development of science and technology is closely related to science popularization, and the connotation and specific actions of science popularization have also been constantly changing since the establishment of People’s Republic of China. By 2025, the role of innovation and development in science popularization services will be significantly improved; the institutional arrangement, which science popularization and technological innovation are equally important, will be basically formed; the action of science popularization will also play an important role in strengthening the construction of scientific literacy in the future.

Science popularization is the adhesive between science and technology and humanities, and it is also a bridge between doctors and patients. Researcher Zheng Nian introduced the science population views of some medical masters in the research of national science popularization ability. Moreover, he summarized the important views of several famous medical professors on health popularization and health education. Zheng believes that with the rapid development of “We Media”, health popularization may become a huge industry in China in the future. As scholars in health humanities, we should actively participate in it by taking advantage of disciplinary advantages.

At present, the main communication technologies for science popularization include oral communication, printing communication, written communication, as well as electronic communication. The main forms of science popularization work include creation and production, dissemination and display, education and publicity. With the support of various technologies and forms, the science population will also evolve towards the direction of culture and industry. Moreover, the functions of science popularization in politics, economy, culture, education, and publicity will also be more clearly reflected.

For the above-mentioned content, Researcher Zheng analyzed the problems that need to be addressed in science popularization development in the new era. Facing with the new changes in the demand for science popularization at the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, it is necessary to establish a global perspective on science popularization, solving the problem of insufficient and unbalanced development, promoting the development of environmental and health popularization. In addition, the function of science popularization should be actively improved, and the problem of science popularization ability should be solved. Researcher Zheng pointed out several trends of science popularization development in the future: firstly, informatization will promote intelligence; secondly, the combination of science popularization with humanities will cultivate the culture of science popularization and build scientific culture.

At the end of the lecture, Researcher Zheng expressed his expectations and hoped that this lecture could convey an idea of science popularization to the audience. A heated discussion on the issues of “the differences between science popularization and technology dissemination, the disputes related to science popularization, the science popularization and the transmission of scientific views and so forth” was carried out among Researcher Zheng and the audience. After that, Associate Professor Chen Qi commented that Researcher Zheng Nian’s lecture on the ideas and methods of science popularization has provided a good guidance for students’ future research and writing in science popularization.
