Lecture Title:  From Cytology to Toxicology: The Origins of Ma Wenzhao's Research on Drug Addiction

Abstract:

Ma Wenzhao served as the dean of Peking University School of Medicine, which later became the Peking University Health Science Center, and was an internationally acclaimed anatomist. Beginning in the 1930s, he carried out a series of innovative laboratory studies at institutions such as Peking Union Medical College and Peking University Medical College, proposing a novel treatment for "drug addiction". This therapeutic approach was grounded in his extensive research in cytology and toxicology, significantly challenging existing paradigms within the international medical and public health communities. Based on Ma Wenzhao's domestic and international archives and correspondence, this presentation examines how he, as a basic medical scientist, successfully transitioned into clinical research on drug addiction. It is anticipated that this study will contribute to a comprehensive evaluation of Ma Wenzhao's scientific contributions and offer new insights into the diverse pathways of drug development in modern East Asia.
