Lecture Title: Beyond the Clinic: Health and Medical Humanities in Durham University

Abstract:

In this lecture, we will explore the concept of ‘health’ as it emerged in the strategic development of Durham University after the closure of its medical school. Drawing on creative processes as part of the process of this conceptual and strategic development, as well as forms of its outputs, we conceive Health@Durham as ‘Beyond the Clinic’ and as interdisciplinary endeavour that relates health to issues of planetary sustainability and to issues of identity and belonging in our communities. We will explore how this framing of health opens up ways of working across the University, in partnership with other Universities globally and together with regional partners – with the ambition to reduce health inequalities and strengthen the resilience of our planet, healthcare systems and communities.
